Balinese dance was created and has been performed as the offering to the deities of Bali.  For the Balinese, dance is a
medium for traveling between “Sekala” (the world of form) and “Niskala” (the world of spirits).  The founders of
Purnama Sari (“essence of full moon”), Surapsari and Indra, studied traditional Balinese dance with internationally
acclaimed masters from Ubud, the arts capital of Bali.  Since its inception in 2000, “Purnama Sari has been performing
and teaching in the U.S. and Bali.

Surapsari holds a Master’s degree in intercultural relations from Lesley University in Massachusetts.  She studied
traditional Balinese dance with masters such as Anak Agung Raka Kusmawati and Ni Wayan Sekariani.  Her extensive
dance repertoire includes Gambuh (the oldest Balinese theatre), classic court dances, ancient ritual dances, mask
dances, modern creations, and her own choreography that incorporates multicultural elements.  Surapsari is also a
published author and teacher on Balinese dance and culture.

Indra holds a Master’s degree in interdisciplinary study from Lesley University.  A great deal of his academic work was
conducted in Bali and centered on ethnographic studies, myth, Jungian psychology, and Balinese dance in practice
and theory.  He has been studying ritual mask dances with I Made Djimat, internationally recognized master from
Batuan village.
Mystical Dances of Bali

rt Center Sarasota, FL
Purnama Sari Balinese Dance Company will present traditional dances
from “The Island of the Gods.”  The troupe’s performance at Rising
Tide International in Sarasota last year brought a standing room only
crowd.  The audience was spellbound by the magic of Balinese
classical and ritual dances. These are punctuated by otherworldly
dance vocabulary, including signature eye movement called Seledet
and dazzling costumes glittered in regal colors.  Drawing from its
extensive repertoire, Purnama Sari will introduce the audience at the
Art Center to dances that express stories from Balinese myth and
Hindu epics.  Ancient mask dances that embody a plethora of
archetypes will also be presented.  Tickets are on sale at the Art
Center Sarasota.  Admissions are $20 for general audience, $15 for
ACS members and students, and $10 for children 12 and under.
Art Center Sarasota is located at 707 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.  For ticket sale and directions to the center,
